BackgroundThe lives of the characters in the Local Spur are wide and varied, and many things will have an impact on who they are and what they are able to do. The Red Stars Chronicles makes use of a Background system that compiles three aspects; Homeworld, Event, and Occupation to create a compilation of history for individual characters. These aspects provide known languages, familiar skills, and particular capabilities that can be helpful to the characters during the campaign. HomeworldsAs humanity has spread throughout the galaxy, the phrase "so, where are you from" has taken on whole new meaning. Chances are that when someone asks, they are not wondering about your neighborhood, city, or even the specific country you hail from, but which rock being hurled through the galaxy you were born on. ( The systems page has additional information regarding the political nature of the locations listed here ) The Homeworld aspect provides a Bonus Language, and three Familiar Skills. Familiar Skills allow you to roll twice when making a Skill Check, and take the better of two results. These are not Trained Skills unless you have specifically selected them during the Chargen Process, received them from the Skill Training Feat?, or it is granted to you by the Event aspect.
EventsEveryone has a defining moment in their life that shaped who they are and what they have become. This series of changes or singular event has helped define you and prepared you for the world you face now, reflecting in special training and skills that have an effect on how you interact with everyone and everything around you. The Event aspect gives you access to a special feature that can be applied when making certain attempts during the course of the campaign, and allows you to select an additional Trained Skill related to the ordeal or adventure.
OccupationsThere are many ways to define an individual, and some would say that 'you are what you do', and in many ways those people are not wrong. What you were before your life was upturned reflects the things you have a knack for, be it a particular way of speaking, general physique, or just the things you have learned to do. The Occupation aspect provides you with three Skill Competencies related to the type of work or lifestyle that your character lived. As with the Familiar Skills provided by the Homeworld aspect, they are not Trained Skills unless you have specifically selected them during the Chargen Process, received them from the Skill Training Feat?, or it is granted to you by the Event aspect. The +2 Competence Bonuses is applied separately from the +5 Trained Bonus, but is lost if the Skill Focus Feat? is selected for that skill.
