Inferior Craftsmanship

Not all weapons are truly combat-capable. Some vendors simply do not sell combat-quality merchandise. A character who buys a sword at the shopping mall is not likely to receive a true, weapons-grade blade. Someone who purchases an old broadsword, or an old German bootknife at a flea market is in for a rude awakening once he tries to swing the weapon in close quarters. Weapons like these are either cheap knock-offs sold under false pretenses or purely as decorative weapons meant to be hung on walls or displayed in cases. They might appear attractive; beautiful even, but that does not mean that the steel can hold an edge, or the grip is anchored to the blade.
