Off-Brand Manufacture

Not all weapons and armor are created by the massive megacorporations. There are several hundreds of thousands of smaller companies and corporations. Though the specifics of model numbers are usually closely-guarded intellectual property and therefore secret, more often than not a piece of hardware gets reverse-engineered, rebuilt, painted a different color, and sold under a different name. Off-Brand manufactured weapons and armor are designed to be used as-is, and-- to some degree --are even designed to be disposable and consumable. Any Mechanics check to modify or repair items with an Off-Brand Manufacturer is done at a +5 DC.

Smaller corporations have a market niche not in providing solid, reliable products, but in producing so-called "value" items that don't cost as much as the name-brand. They keep their profit margin by removing extras from the base models. As such, Off-Brand Armor has no pre-installed equipment. Off-Brand Weapons do not have any included accessories or ammo supplies. Any power packs, energy cells, or magazines would need to be purchased separately.
